Sonya YONCHEVA, soprano
William Christie, Sonya Yoncheva and the orchestra of Les Arts Florissants have accepted the invitation of the Bayerische Staatsoper for a unique concert devoted to one of their favorite composers, Handel.
It was while hearing her sing in a choir that William Christie discovered the exceptional talent of a young Bulgarian soprano, still unknown to the public, and invited her to join his academy for young baroque singers. We are in 2007... and this singer's name is Sonya Yoncheva.
Since that first meeting, the story that binds William Christie to Sonya Yoncheva is one of sincere musical friendship and mutual admiration. Reunited on stage for the first time since Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea (Salzburg Festival 2018), it is a tailor-made program that they have composed together, with a selection of Handel's greatest operatic arias, from Serse to Alcina, via Agrippina, Giulio Cesare, Theodora and Rinaldo. A repertoire in which Sonya Yoncheva has established herself as an incandescent interpreter, and William Christie as an undisputed master. How not to succumb?
