Contemporary Baroque music at the 2016 Festival

August 23 2016

Music that sounds during the festival Dans les Jardins de William Christie is Baroque, of course, but not only from 17th and 18th centuries. Every year, William Christie and Paul Agnew give the opportunity to young talents to compose contemporary Baroque music works.

For the 5th edition of the Festival, Douglas Balliett, young musician and composer alum of The Juilliard School of Music of New York, composed a Baroque piece, Pyramus and Thisbe, inspired by the Temporary Garden and played for the Promenades musicales.

Pyramus and Thisbe is a cantata for two voices (sung by Jennifer Coursier, soprano and Anicet Castel, bass, singers of Les Arts Florissants) and instrumental ensemble (Augusta McKay Lodge, violin, Toma Iliev, alto, Joseph Monticello, flute, Alexander Nicholls, cello and Douglass Balliett, doublebass) from The Juilliard School.
