2015 temporary-garden competition for young landscape designers

William Christie has long been committed to the education and training of young musicians. In the same spirit, with a view to encouraging young landscape designers, he launched a competition for the creation of a temporary garden at the annual festival Dans les Jardins de William Christie in 2015.

The competition for the 2015 Temporary Garden was open to young landscape designers under 30.

The Temporary Garden was intended to accommodate concerts during the Promenades musicales at the 2015 festival, which took place from August 22 to 29 in Thiré, in the Vendée region of France.

Jury

The members of the 2016 jury were:

William Christie, Musical Director and Founder of Les Arts Florissants and of the festival Dans les Jardins de William Christie
Marc Barbaud, gardener, artist
Chantal Colleu-Dumont, Director of the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, President of the 2016 jury
Henry-Claude Cousseau, President of Les Jardins de Musique de William Christie en Vendée
Elodie Fonnard, singer and winner of Le Jardin des Voix in 2011
John Hoyland, garden adviser to Glyndebourne
Maryvonne Pinault, patron of the competition

The winners

Following a call for submissions, 29 entries were received from 42 candidates aged betwen 22 ad 30, who competed whether alone or with a partner. The jury chose the entry of Les Arplanteurs, which they called À l’ombre de la prairie baroque. Les Arplanteurs - Hermeline Carpentier et Simon Cathelain - are landscape architects who completed their studies at Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Paysage in Versailles in 2014. Their winning project comprised a shaded Baroque pairie that made of each performance there an enchanted ritual in a stage of greenery.
